It would be difficult to think of a pest that is more loathed than a rat. Rats have played an infamous role in history and are directly responsible for perhaps the biggest spread of disease in history. Even now they pose an obvious and significant health risk and can still cause substantial damage by chewing through walls, support beams, doors, and even electrical wiring.
Significant Damage
Although estimates vary, it is more than
likely that damage caused by rats’ results in a scarcely fathomable figure of one fifth of the world’s total food output is either eaten, spoiled or destroyed by rats! Rats can be extremely destructive to crops and property, and are widely regarded as vermin. Rats pro-create at a lightening rate and if they populate a place which contains no natural predators, they can quickly overpopulate the vicinity and become very hard to contain.
Spread of Disease
Rats can defecate anything up to fifty times a day and they are constantly urinating. Also, whilst disease isn’t quite as serious a concern as it once was, rats and the ticks and fleas they carry, are still directly responsible for spreading a horrifying range of diseases including:
- Salmonella
- Weil’s disease
- E.coli
- Tuberculosis
For these reasons and many more it is of the utmost importance that effective and efficient rats pest control measures are quickly implemented to remove these risks from the area.
Rats can quite comfortably squeeze themselves through any hole that their skull allows (roughly 1cm), and this makes the task of rat proofing your property one that should be left to the experts. As part of the rats pest control measures provided by Safeguard’s pest control technicians we can effectively ‘rat proof’ your property to ensure that once we have eradicated the existing population, they will not return at some point in the near future. We have a wide range of proven techniques at our disposal which are not only effective but also long lasting.
If you even suspect any sign of a rat presence in or around your property, it is very important that you act quickly and let our team of pest control experts conduct a free and comprehensive survey of the area to ascertain the size of the problem.
Signs of Rat Presence
Because rats can enter properties through the smallest of gaps and via, pipes, tunnels etc and do not need huge gaps to enter buildings, it is important to be vigilant as there will still be signs of rats having been present in an area.
Some of the signs you may find in your home or garden may include:
- Unusual noises in under floor boards, inside walls, or under decking in a back garden.
- Rat droppings. Rats regularly leave small dark droppings which measure roughly about 1 – 2cm long.
- Unpleasant odours – Rats leave behind an unpleasant odour (similar to ammonia) that will be particularly strong in enclosed areas.
- Significant Damage – Because rats’ teeth grow continuously, they have an insatiable need to gnaw on wood, plastic and even mild steel in order to keep them down. It is not unknown for rats to cause fires through this activity.
If you suspect any sign of a rat related problem, give us a call and you will receive a service from our pest control technicians which is certain to include:
- Guaranteed swift response time
- Survey conducted at a time which is convenient to you
- Solutions provided by friendly and knowledgeable technicians

Once the survey of the area has been completed, our expert team will move quickly to implement the measures needed to eradicate the rats from the affected area.
